IS DANCING A SIN?

A lot of people have been told that dancing is a sin, but what does the Bible say about it?

dance 7540
H7540 רקד râqad raw-kad' A primitive root; properly to stamp, that is, to spring about (wildly or for joy): - dance, jump, leap, skip.

Exodus 15:20-21 " And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea."

1Samuel 18:6 " And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of music."

1Samuel 30:16 " And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon, all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land, of the Philistines, and out of the land, of Judah."

2Samuel 6:14-23  " And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house.  Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel today, who uncovered himself today in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself! And David said unto Michal, It was before the Lord, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel: therefore will I play before the Lord.  And I will yet be more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.  Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death."

1Chronicles 15:29 " And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing: and she despised him in her heart."

Psalms 30:11 " Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;"

Psalms 149:3 " Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp."

Psalms 150:4 " Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs."

Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 " To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven..... A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;"

Jeremiah 31:13 " Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow."

Luke 15:24-25 " For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing."

It appears that dancing was an expression of joy, as well as, a way to praise the Lord. Why even Christ used the example of dancing in his parable above to show that dancing was an acceptable means of expressing joy or chances are he would not have used it, or would have said not to dance. So clearly, the Bible does not condenm dancing, it does warn against wrong thoughts and desires, in this regard, certain types of dancing may be wrong.
Whether you take to the floor is your choice, don't let someone else make it for you.
