Antichrist / Man of Sin / Lawless One

So what does the expression “anti-Christ” mean?

Strong’s G500 an-tee'-khris-tos = from G473 and G5547.

The word Anti-Christ can mean one who is opposed to or against Christ, but in the Greek it can also mean a substitution for Christ.

Strong’s G473 anti (an-tee’); = a primary particle; opposite, i.e. instead or because of (rarely in addition to): Often used in composition to denote contrast, requital, substitution, correspondence.

Strong’s G5547 = Christos, means Christ or Messiah.

So, the term Antichrist can mean both a substitution for Christ, or instead of Christ, as well as one who is opposed to Christ. To be opposed to Christ would be to oppose his teachings.

Antichrist

1 John 2:18 - 26 "Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us (they were claiming to be Christians), but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denies the Father and the Son. Whosoever denies the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledges the Son hath the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life, These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you."

1 John 4:1: 3 "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesses not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world."

2 John 1:7 "For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist".

There were many antichrists because there were many that departed from the original faith into false doctrines. They professed to be Christians but taught things contrary to what was preached from the beginning.

Man of Sin

2 Thessalonians 2:1-15 "Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness..."

2 Thessalonians 2:2-12 "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness."

Clearly the man of sin is anyone who claims to be acting in place of Christ, and claiming to be above all others.

Something that is note worthy is that the pontiff or Pope is referred to as the “vicar of Christ”, the word vicar comes from a Latin term:

vicar (n.) = early 14c., from Anglo-French vicare, Old French vicaire "deputy, second in command," also in the ecclesiastical sense (12c.), from Latin vicarius "a substitute, deputy, proxy," noun use of adjective vicarius "substituted, delegated," from vicis "change, interchange, succession; a place, position" (from PIE root *weik- (2) "to bend, to wind"). The original notion is of "earthly representative of God or Christ;" but also used in sense of "person acting as parish priest in place of a real parson" (early 14c.).

As for the temple of God:

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are."

1 Corinthians 6:18-20 "Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."

2 Corinthians 6:16 "And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."

1 Peter 2:5 "Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ."

He claims to have the spirit of God dwelling within him, as well, as being a holy priesthood. He exalts himself above all others in the body of God, thus claiming that he as God sitteth in the temple of God.

Lawless One

The Apocalypse of Elijah 3:1-18 "In the fourth year of that king, the son of lawlessness will appear, saying, "I am the Christ," although he is not. Don't believe him! When the Christ comes, He will come in the manner of a covey of doves with the crown of doves surrounding Him. He will walk upon the heaven's vaults with the sign of the cross leading Him. The whole world will behold Him like the sun which shines from the eastern horizon to the western. This is how He will come, with all his angels surrounding Him. But the son of lawlessness will begin to stand again in the holy places. He will say to the sun, "Fall," and it will fall. He will say, "Shine," and it will do it. He will say, "Darken," and it will do it. He will say to the moon, "Become bloody," and it will do it. He will go forth with them from the sky. He will walk upon the sea and the rivers as upon dry land. He will cause the lame to walk. He will cause the deaf to hear. He will cause the dumb to speak. He will cause the blind to see. The lepers he will cleanse. The ill he will heal. The demons he will cast out. He will multiply his signs and his wonders in the presence of everyone. He will do the works which the Christ did, except for raising the dead alone. In this you will know that he is the son of lawlessness, because he is unable to give life. For behold I will tell you his signs so that you might know him. He is a ...of a skinny-legged young lad, having a tuft of gray hair at the front of his bald head.  His eyebrows will reach to his ears. There is a leprous bare spot on the front of his hands. He will transform himself in the presence of those who see him. He will become a young child. He will become old. He will transform himself in every sign. But the signs of his head will not be able to change. There in you will know that he is the son of lawlessness."

The man of sin will have the same qualities of Satan,

  • He will appear Godly "for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14)
  • He will deceive the world "Satan which deceiveth the whole world" (Revelation 12:9)
  • There will be little truth in his words "because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar" (John 8:44)
  • He will claim the powers of God "For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God... I will be like the most High" (Isaiah 14:12-14)

(1) That which had to fall out of the way first, was the Roman Empire with its Caesars, before the man of sin could come to power.
(2) They apparently knew what withheld the man of sin from coming to power, for it was present at that time.
(3) "He" that is mentioned was the Caesars.
(4) After the fall of the Roman Empire with its Caesars, the Roman Catholic Church with its Popes rose up in its place.
(5) He will claim the powers of God.

Fate of the Antichrist and those that follow him

Revelation 19:20-21 "And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh."
