Gluttony / Obesity
Gluttony is a very important subject just as alcoholism is, it is hoped that this will highlight its importance.
Definition of gluttony
- Excess in eating or drinking
- Greedy or excessive indulgence
The Bible mentions obesity, or excessive eating, and it normally is associated with individuals who lack godly morals. If you are out of control physically, are you in control mentally?
Deuteronomy 21:18-21 "If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear."
Deuteronomy 32:15 "But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation."
Proverbs 13:25 "The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want."
Proverbs 23:1-6 " When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat. -- Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:"
Proverbs 23:19-21 "Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way. Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags."
Proverbs 25:16 " Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it."
Proverbs 27:20 " Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied."
Proverbs 30:21-22 For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear: For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat;
Job 15:27 " Because he [speaking of a wicked man] covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks."
Isaiah 10:16 "Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire."
Jeremiah 5:28 " They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge."
Jeremiah 50:11-12 "Because ye were glad, because ye rejoiced, O ye destroyers of mine heritage, because ye are grown fat as the heifer at grass, and bellow as bulls; Your mother shall be sore confounded; she that bare you shall be ashamed: behold, the hindermost of the nations shall be a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert."
Part of the problem is that people are eating chemically-laced, highly processed, or just unhealthy foods.
Isaiah 55:2 "Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness."
When Esau sold his birthright for "one morsel of food" he demonstrated that fleshly things, such as food, were far more important to him than spiritual things
Romans 12:1 " I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God,"
It is impossible for anyone to present there bodies as a "holy living sacrifice" when they are indulging themselves by over eating.
Philippians 3:18-19 " For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things."
These scriptures show that one of the attributes of the wicked is that they cannot satisfy their appetite for food, causing many to end up fat.
